Hydroelectric Dams in the United States

Hydroelectric dams convert the energy of flowing water into electricity by channeling it through turbines. They're a major source of renewable energy in the United States, providing about 6% of the nation's electricity and roughly 30% of its renewable generation. These dams tend to be among the largest and tallest in the country, impounding massive reservoirs.

Because of the volumes of water they hold and their proximity to populated areas, most hydroelectric dams carry high hazard classifications. Their critical role in the power grid means they receive close regulatory oversight and frequent inspections.
