They're commonly used to stop gullies from deepening and to protect downstream land and infrastructure. The dam is owned by Fox Creek Township Board (local government). It impounds the Tr-thompson River near Chillicothe.

The dam stands 30 feet tall and stretches 270 feet across, creates a reservoir covering 15 acres, has a maximum storage capacity of 20 acre-feet, and collects water from a drainage area of 130 square miles. Completed in 1977, the structure is 49 years old.

This dam has a low hazard potential classification, meaning that failure would cause minimal damage, limited primarily to the dam owner's property, with no expected loss of life.
