The primary purpose of Daniels is irrigation. The dam stores and diverts water for agricultural irrigation, supporting farming operations in the surrounding area. The dam is private-owned. It impounds the Little Malad River Malad River near St Johns.

The dam stands 96 feet tall and stretches 775 feet across, creates a reservoir covering 375 acres, has a storage capacity of 8,700 acre-feet, and collects water from a drainage area of 107 square miles. Completed in 1967, the structure is well into its service life at over 50 years old.
