The primary purpose of Kearney Lake is irrigation. The dam stores and diverts water for agricultural irrigation, supporting farming operations in the surrounding area. The dam is owned by Kearney Lake Land & Res. Co.-john Koltiska (private). It impounds the North Fork South Piney Creek near Story.

The dam stands 67 feet tall and stretches 1,032 feet across, creates a reservoir covering 193 acres, has a maximum storage capacity of 7,500 acre-feet, and collects water from a drainage area of 15 square miles. Completed in 1963, the structure is well into its service life at over 50 years old.
