The primary purpose of Royal Lake Dam is flood risk reduction. The dam is designed to control downstream flooding by temporarily storing excess water during storms and releasing it at a controlled rate. The dam is owned by Woodside Plantation Property Owners Association (private). It impounds the Hollow Creek.

The dam stands 29 feet tall, creates a reservoir covering 9 acres, and has a maximum storage capacity of 200 acre-feet. Completed in 1990, the structure is 36 years old.
