The primary purpose of Buzzards Roost Spillway is hydroelectric. The dam generates hydroelectric power by channeling water through turbines, converting the energy of flowing water into electricity. The dam is owned by Greenwood County, Sc (local government). It impounds the Saluda River near Lake Murray.

The dam stands 93 feet tall and stretches 393 feet across, creates a reservoir covering 11,400 acres, has a maximum storage capacity of 256,000 acre-feet, and collects water from a drainage area of 1,170 square miles. Completed in 1940, the structure is well-established, with more than 75 years of service.
