About Dos Bocas Dam

The primary purpose of Dos Bocas Dam is hydroelectric. The dam generates hydroelectric power by channeling water through turbines, converting the energy of flowing water into electricity. The dam is owned by Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (public utility). It impounds the Arecibo River near Arecibo.

The dam stands 188 feet tall, creates a reservoir covering 634 acres, has a maximum storage capacity of 50,000 acre-feet, and collects water from a drainage area of 170 square miles. Completed in 1942, the structure is well-established, with more than 75 years of service.

This dam carries a high hazard potential classification, which means that a failure or uncontrolled release of water would likely cause loss of human life.
