About North Canal Diversion

The primary purpose of North Canal Diversion is hydroelectric. The dam generates hydroelectric power by channeling water through turbines, converting the energy of flowing water into electricity. The dam is owned by Riverhouse Property, Llc (public utility). It impounds the Deschutes River near Bend.

The dam stands 35 feet tall and stretches 200 feet across, creates a reservoir covering 31 acres, has a maximum storage capacity of 40 acre-feet, and collects water from a drainage area of 1,900 square miles. Completed in 1906, the structure is over a century old.
