The primary purpose of Rim Dike 1 is hydroelectric. The dam generates hydroelectric power by channeling water through turbines, converting the energy of flowing water into electricity. The dam is owned by Grand River Dam Authority (state). It impounds the Salina Creek, Neosho River.

The dam stands 15 feet tall and stretches 3,000 feet across, creates a reservoir covering 742 acres, and has a maximum storage capacity of 48,225 acre-feet. Completed in 1968, the structure is well into its service life at over 50 years old.
