The primary purpose of Rushcreek Structure No. Vi-a is flood risk reduction. The dam is designed to control downstream flooding by temporarily storing excess water during storms and releasing it at a controlled rate. The dam is owned by Rushcreek Conservancy District (local government). It impounds the Little Rush Creek near Rushville.

The dam stands 58 feet tall and stretches 1,550 feet across, creates a reservoir covering 306 acres, has a maximum storage capacity of 15,386 acre-feet, and collects water from a drainage area of 28 square miles. Completed in 1982, the structure is 44 years old.
