The primary purpose of Garnet Lake Dam is fire protection, stock, or small fish pond. The dam maintains a small impoundment used for fire suppression, livestock watering, or as a fish pond. The dam is owned by Garnet Lake Conservation Association;town Of Johnsburgh (private). It impounds the Mill Creek near Garnet Lake.

The dam stands 15 feet tall and stretches 160 feet across, creates a reservoir covering 287 acres, has a maximum storage capacity of 2,464 acre-feet, and collects water from a drainage area of 8 square miles. Completed in 1903, the structure is over a century old.
