The primary purpose of Sweetgrass Dam is irrigation. The dam stores and diverts water for agricultural irrigation, supporting farming operations in the surrounding area. The dam is owned by Riverside Association Management (private). It impounds the Boone Fork near Blowing Rock.

The dam stands 35 feet tall and stretches 740 feet across, creates a reservoir covering 20 acres, has a maximum storage capacity of 439 acre-feet, and collects water from a drainage area of 2 square miles. Completed in 2008, the structure is relatively new.
