The primary purpose of Cheoah is hydroelectric. The dam generates hydroelectric power by channeling water through turbines, converting the energy of flowing water into electricity. The dam is owned by Brookfield Renewable Energy Group (aro) (private). It impounds the Little Tennessee near Tapoco.

The dam stands 236 feet tall and stretches 750 feet across, creates a reservoir covering 1,767 acres, has a maximum storage capacity of 42,000 acre-feet, and collects water from a drainage area of 1,608 square miles. Completed in 1919, the structure is over a century old.
