About Soendker Lake Dam
The primary purpose of Soendker Lake Dam is grade stabilization. Grade stabilization dams prevent erosion by reducing the slope and velocity of water flowing through a channel. They're commonly used to stop gullies from deepening and to protect downstream land and infrastructure. The dam is owned by George Soendker (private). It impounds the Tr-little Sni-a-bar Creek near Lexington.
The dam stands 31 feet tall and stretches 325 feet across, creates a reservoir covering 1 acres, has a maximum storage capacity of 30 acre-feet, and collects water from a drainage area of 165 square miles. Completed in 1954, the structure is well into its service life at over 50 years old.
This dam has a low hazard potential classification, meaning that failure would cause minimal damage, limited primarily to the dam owner's property, with no expected loss of life.
