The primary purpose of Wyman is hydroelectric. The dam generates hydroelectric power by channeling water through turbines, converting the energy of flowing water into electricity. The dam is owned by Brookfield Renewable Power Llc Nyro (private). It impounds the Kennebec River near Bingham.

The dam stands 155 feet tall and stretches 3,054 feet across, creates a reservoir covering 3,240 acres, has a maximum storage capacity of 208,910 acre-feet, and collects water from a drainage area of 2,619 square miles. Completed in 1930, the structure is well-established, with more than 75 years of service.

This dam carries a high hazard potential classification, which means that a failure or uncontrolled release of water would likely cause loss of human life.
