The primary purpose of Lake Henry is irrigation. The dam stores and diverts water for agricultural irrigation, supporting farming operations in the surrounding area. The dam is owned by Colorado Canal Company (matt Rouleau) (private). It impounds the Horse Creek-os near Ordway.

The dam stands 24 feet tall and stretches 12,920 feet across, creates a reservoir covering 1,194 acres, has a maximum storage capacity of 14,914 acre-feet, and collects water from a drainage area of 7 square miles. Completed in 1914, the structure is over a century old.
