The primary purpose of L E D E is irrigation. The dam stores and diverts water for agricultural irrigation, supporting farming operations in the surrounding area. The dam is owned by Town Of Gypsum (hancock, Jim) (local government). It impounds the Gypsum Creek near Gypsum.

The dam stands 57 feet tall and stretches 825 feet across, creates a reservoir covering 36 acres, has a maximum storage capacity of 1,153 acre-feet, and collects water from a drainage area of 1 square miles. Completed in 1931, the structure is well-established, with more than 75 years of service.
