The primary purpose of Prewitt is irrigation. The dam stores and diverts water for agricultural irrigation, supporting farming operations in the surrounding area. The dam is owned by Logan Irrigation District (yahn, Jim) (private). It impounds the South Platte River-os near Merino.

The dam stands 43 feet tall and stretches 15,400 feet across, creates a reservoir covering 2,329 acres, has a maximum storage capacity of 51,387 acre-feet, and collects water from a drainage area of 105 square miles. Completed in 1912, the structure is over a century old.
