The primary purpose of Crane Valley is hydroelectric. The dam generates hydroelectric power by channeling water through turbines, converting the energy of flowing water into electricity. The dam is owned by Pacific Gas And Electric Company (private). It impounds the North Fork Willow Creek near North Fork.

The dam stands 145 feet tall and stretches 1,880 feet across, creates a reservoir covering 1,165 acres, has a maximum storage capacity of 45,410 acre-feet, and collects water from a drainage area of 39 square miles. Completed in 1910, the structure is over a century old.
