The primary purpose of Gunnison Bend is irrigation. The dam stores and diverts water for agricultural irrigation, supporting farming operations in the surrounding area. The dam is owned by Deseret & Abraham Irrigation Company (private). It impounds the Sevier River near Deseret.

The dam stands 19 feet tall and stretches 1,600 feet across, has a maximum storage capacity of 6,950 acre-feet, and collects water from a drainage area of 7,300 square miles. Completed in 1895, the structure is over a century old.
