The primary purpose of Old Lake Dam is recreation. The dam creates a reservoir used for recreational activities such as fishing, boating, and swimming. The dam is owned by Coon Creek Club (private). It impounds the Shelton Mill Branch.

The dam stands 17 feet tall and stretches 2,500 feet across, creates a reservoir covering 183 acres, has a maximum storage capacity of 2,300 acre-feet, and collects water from a drainage area of 21 square miles. Completed in 1902, the structure is over a century old.
