The primary purpose of Noxon Rapids is hydroelectric. The dam generates hydroelectric power by channeling water through turbines, converting the energy of flowing water into electricity. The dam is owned by Avista Corporation (private). It impounds the Clark Fork River near Noxon, Mt.

The dam stands 260 feet tall and stretches 5,840 feet across, creates a reservoir covering 7,940 acres, has a maximum storage capacity of 400,000 acre-feet, and collects water from a drainage area of 21,800 square miles. Completed in 1960, the structure is well into its service life at over 50 years old.
