The primary purpose of Bagnell is hydroelectric. The dam generates hydroelectric power by channeling water through turbines, converting the energy of flowing water into electricity. The dam is owned by Union Electric Company (private). It impounds the Osage River near Bagnell.

The dam stands 148 feet tall and stretches 2,543 feet across, creates a reservoir covering 55,342 acres, has a maximum storage capacity of 2,677,000 acre-feet, and collects water from a drainage area of 14,000 square miles. Completed in 1931, the structure is well-established, with more than 75 years of service.
