The primary purpose of Ripogenus is hydroelectric. The dam generates hydroelectric power by channeling water through turbines, converting the energy of flowing water into electricity. It impounds the West Branch Penobscot River near Millinocket.

The dam stands 83 feet tall and stretches 795 feet across, creates a reservoir covering 29,279 acres, has a maximum storage capacity of 688,000 acre-feet, and collects water from a drainage area of 1,422 square miles. Completed in 1916, the structure is over a century old.
