The primary purpose of Oakdale is recreation. The dam creates a reservoir used for recreational activities such as fishing, boating, and swimming. The dam is owned by Northern Indiana Public Service Company (public utility). It impounds the Tippecanoe River near Yeoman.

The dam stands 64 feet tall and stretches 1,692 feet across, creates a reservoir covering 1,547 acres, has a maximum storage capacity of 24,752 acre-feet, and collects water from a drainage area of 1,793 square miles. Completed in 1925, the structure is over a century old.
