The primary purpose of C J Strike is hydroelectric. The dam generates hydroelectric power by channeling water through turbines, converting the energy of flowing water into electricity. The dam is owned by Idaho Power Company (private). It impounds the Snake River near Grandview.

The dam stands 115 feet tall and stretches 3,220 feet across, creates a reservoir covering 7,500 acres, has a maximum storage capacity of 250,000 acre-feet, and collects water from a drainage area of 40,800 square miles. Completed in 1952, the structure is well into its service life at over 50 years old.
