The primary purpose of Swan Falls is hydroelectric. The dam generates hydroelectric power by channeling water through turbines, converting the energy of flowing water into electricity. The dam is owned by Idaho Power Company (private). It impounds the Snake River.

The dam stands 88 feet tall and stretches 1,150 feet across, creates a reservoir covering 1,525 acres, has a storage capacity of 7,425 acre-feet, and collects water from a drainage area of 41,900 square miles. Completed in 1901, the structure is over a century old.
