The primary purpose of Fairview is water supply. The dam stores water for municipal, industrial, or agricultural use, helping ensure a reliable supply for the surrounding area. The dam is owned by Project 7 Water Authority (turner, Adam) (public utility). It impounds the Uncompahgre River,tr&sp-tr near Montrose.

The dam stands 58 feet tall and stretches 900 feet across, creates a reservoir covering 36 acres, and has a maximum storage capacity of 540 acre-feet. Completed in 1968, the structure is well into its service life at over 50 years old.
