About Trout Lake

The primary purpose of Trout Lake is hydroelectric. The dam generates hydroelectric power by channeling water through turbines, converting the energy of flowing water into electricity. The dam is owned by Public Service Company Of Colorado (public utility). It impounds the South Fork San Miguel River-tr near Sawpit.

The dam stands 43 feet tall and stretches 570 feet across, creates a reservoir covering 138 acres, has a maximum storage capacity of 3,200 acre-feet, and collects water from a drainage area of 13 square miles. Completed in 1910, the structure is over a century old.
