The primary purpose of Quail is water supply. The dam stores water for municipal, industrial, or agricultural use, helping ensure a reliable supply for the surrounding area. The dam is owned by California Department Of Water Resources (state). It impounds the West Branch Ca Aqueduct near Piru.

The dam stands 50 feet tall and stretches 350 feet across, creates a reservoir covering 290 acres, has a maximum storage capacity of 8,613 acre-feet, and collects water from a drainage area of 6 square miles. Completed in 1981, the structure is 45 years old.
