The primary purpose of Lake Hemet is water supply. The dam stores water for municipal, industrial, or agricultural use, helping ensure a reliable supply for the surrounding area. The dam is owned by Lake Hemet Municipal Water District (public utility). It impounds the Tr San Jacinto River near Valle Vista.

The dam stands 135 feet tall and stretches 324 feet across, creates a reservoir covering 470 acres, has a maximum storage capacity of 14,000 acre-feet, and collects water from a drainage area of 65 square miles. Completed in 1895, the structure is over a century old.
