The primary purpose of Sabrina is hydroelectric. The dam generates hydroelectric power by channeling water through turbines, converting the energy of flowing water into electricity. The dam is owned by Southern California Edison Company (private). It impounds the Middle Fork Bishop Creek near Bishop.

The dam stands 70 feet tall and stretches 900 feet across, creates a reservoir covering 184 acres, has a maximum storage capacity of 8,376 acre-feet, and collects water from a drainage area of 17 square miles. Completed in 1908, the structure is over a century old.
